Story Reading in The Classroom

LITERACY ACROSS THE CURRICULUM

One of the components of an effective reading program is the use of Read Alouds which result in Think Alouds.  A Read Aloud is a teacher chosen book which will be read aloud to the students.  The teacher models what good readers do, what good readers are thinking as they read, and how they use strategies.  This is an opportunity to share excellent literature, which may be too challenging for students to read on their own.  It is also a time to do some explicit teaching around children learning to Think Aloud.

Following is a list of some of the favorite Read Alouds for the Kindergarten and Grade One children at St. Monica School.  Although there is considerable overlap, we have categorized just a few of our favorites utilizing a Think Aloud strategy.
